In Word 2010 Microsoft has made vast improvements for implementing images into your documents. Here are several examples of some of the new features and options available:
When you transition from Word 2003 or older to Word 2007 or 2010, you likely noticed the change in the extension of Word documents from .doc to docx. The new file extension is to better differentiate new documents because many of the new features in in Word 2007 and 2010 are not compatible with older versions of Word, including the improved graphics and images features.
To see some of the new features, follow these steps:
- Open Word 2010
- Select the Insert tab
- Locate the Illustrations group
- Choose Picture (this opens a dialogue box)
- Select your image and then click Insert
- Select the newly inserted image on the page and notice a new tab in the ribbon called Format (format tab only appears when an image is selected)
From the Format tab you have the following new options:
- The Adjust group:
- Artistic Effects – use to manipulate the image to appear drawn, blurred or other various effects
- Corrections – adjust the contrast/brightness or soften/sharpen the image
- Color – adjust the saturation, tone or recolor the image entirely
- The Picture Styles group includes the following:
- Picture Styles – use the presets to manipulate your photo for 3D rotation, reflection, soft edges and more. To manually do this, see the Picture Effects
- Picture Border – Add a border to your image at any color
- Picture Effects – Manually add shadows, reflections, glows, soft edges, bevel or 3-D rotations to your image
Also, if you made changes to your image that you do not like, and want to go back to the original image, simply click Reset Picture in the Adjust group under the Format tab.
Overall, Word 2010 has improve presentation capabilities with strong graphical enhancements. The TriQuest Team recommends upgrading, if you have not already done so, to take advantage of these new features.
